Fancy dress ideas for World Book Day

Posted in The World of Smiffys Fancy Dress by Smiffy's Fancy Dress on January 21st 2017
In recent years, World Book Day has proven very popular with schools, children and parents alike. Celebrating children’s literature, schools encourage pupils to take part by dressing up as their favourite characters and to share the joy that reading brings. With so much fun to be had in being creative with their favourite characters, it’s no surprise to see that children get excited and enjoy the day.

At Smiffys Fancy Dress, we have a wide range of children’s fancy dress, from books, film and TV. With over a decade of trading experience, you can be rest assured that we have a wide selection of items that will be perfect for whatever the occasion may be. Although we’re based out of physical stores in Liverpool and Chester city centres, much of our business is done online and we are able to deliver all items to any location in the UK, including next day (weekday) delivery.

What exactly is World Book Day?

2017 will represent the 20th World Book Day and it will take place on the 2nd March in the UK and Ireland. The day is a celebration of books, the people who create them and of course, those who read them. Being designated as an official celebration of books by UNESCO, the event is marked in well over 100 countries worldwide.

The aim of World Book Day in the UK is to encourage children to enjoy reading books and learning about the joy and pleasures that are taken from delving into a good story. Children are also encouraged to take away a book of their own to enjoy, to learn how to enjoy reading and improve their literacy skills. This is why the organisation sends out a number of materials, including book tokens and age-ranged resource packs that are packed full of display materials, activity items and further information on how to get involved with the day. Children can take their tokens to a local bookseller and exchange it for one of ten books that have been specially chosen by World Book Day, or alternatively, use it to get £1 off any other book of their choice.

Fancy dress ideas for World Book Day

With World Book Day being an exciting time for children (especially seeing as they don’t have to wear their uniform for the day!) here are some fancy dress ideas for the big day:

  • Follow the yellow brick road! One of the best-loved children’s fantasy books in history, The Wizard of Oz is a timeless classic that is familiar with people of all ages. First published in 1900 as ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’, the story by L Frank Baum is about a young farm girl from Kansas, who is transported to a magical world far beyond her own. The book proved to be so popular after its release, that it was the best-selling children’s book for a solid two years! Adapted into many a film, television and stage production over the years, the most notable version of the book is without a doubt, the 1939 musical starring Judy Garland. Due to the colourful imagery that the film presents and the amount of quirky characters it contains - it makes it a lot of fun to dress up as them! So if you’ve got a little Dorothy or a strapping Tin-Man who enjoy the story, our Wizard of Oz range would be perfect! Even if your daughter wants to be a Wicked Witch – let Smiffys transport them to the merry old land of Oz!
  • The Roald Dahl collection. One of the best (and most prolific) storytellers of all-time, Roald Dahl was the British author responsible for such children’s classics as Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG, The Fantastic Mr Fox and many more. His books (and now films) are considered timeless classics and as time goes on, even more children are starting to enjoy his stories, which combine the feelings experienced by children, with fantastical events. If your child is a fan, we have a number of costumes that have been inspired by Mr Dahl’s stories, including Willy Wonka (the mysterious owner of the Chocolate Factory!), the Big Friendly Giant, the fantastic Mr Fox and the brilliant student Matilda (even the villainous Miss Trunchbull, to keep Matilda in check!)
  • Where’s Wally? A different kind of book, but one that is enjoyable nonetheless! These picture books work to help the reader to improve their problem-solving skills by not just having to find Wally, the mysterious, slippery bespectacled young man dressed in red-and-white stripes, but also other characters, including his friends (such as Wenda), pets and inanimate objects. There’s hours of fun to be had – and that’s just the dressing up as them, let alone finding the characters in the book!
