The Dos And Don’ts Of Halloween Fancy Dress

If you don’t know what to wear for Halloween this year, here’s a quick list of the Dos and Don’ts to give you a helping hand.

The Dos Of Halloween Costumes

  • Look To Film & TV For Inspiration
If you’re struggling to decide what to wear for Halloween, all hope is not lost. Film and television are fantastic sources for inspiration. With lots of scary horror movies, spooky urban fantasy stories, and more to choose from, you’ll be spoiled for choice.

However, you don’t have to wear a scary costume on Halloween. If you’re attending a party with young children, or if you want to stand out from the crowd, perhaps you could dress up as a character from a television show or film that you used to enjoy when you were a child? Alternately you could look to videogame characters or cartoon characters for your fancy dress – numerous comic book conventions around the world have costume contests; which would be great sources of fancy dress inspiration.

  • Customise Your Costume With Accessories
If you want to make your costume more unique and stand out, customising it with accessories is a fantastic idea. For example, you use some special effects makeup and some fake blood to make a Halloween costume look extra spooky.

Smiffys-Liverpool has lots of fun accessories to choose from. For example, if you would like to dress up as a vampire, you could take your costume to the next level by using an accessory such as a Vampire Brow 3D FX Transfer which uses technology that garnered Tinsley Transfers an Academy Award for Technical Achievement. The vampire brow is a revolutionary new prosthetic that is easy to apply and self blending, with no need for any glues or other messy adhesives.

  • Co-Ordinate Your Fancy Dress With Friends
Another great way to stand out on Halloween is to organise a group costume with your friends. There are lots of fun duo and group costumes to choose from, including bananas in pyjamas, Batman & Robin, The Avengers, and more.

Additionally, instead of dressing as a group of characters with your friends, you could dress up in a specific theme. For example, you could all dress up as zombies, as pirates, or dress up as students from Hogwarts.

The Don’ts Of Halloween Fancy Dress

  • Don’t Use ‘Real Paint’
If you decide to paint your face or wear a costume that includes body paint, make sure that you only use paint which is designed for use on human skin. Some paints such as acrylic paints can contain ammonia, formaldehyde, and various heavy metals which can be very dangerous if ingested. The chemical formaldehyde is known as a VOC (volatile organic compound) and according to gov it is has been classified as a probable human carcinogen by the EPA.

Additionally, it’s important to note that painting your entire body in body paint can be dangerous. It can cause heatstroke as the paint covers your pores and stops your body from cooling correctly.

  • Don’t Wait Until The Last Moment
If you would like to dress up for Halloween, make sure that you choose your costume as soon as you can. Otherwise you might find the ideal costume for you, but be unable to purchase it in time because it is out of stock. This could result in you wearing no costume at the fancy dress party, or perhaps deciding to not show up at all, which would be a shame.

  • Don’t Forget/Ignore Safety Tips
When choosing your fancy dress costume it is very important that you pay careful attention to any safety tips and advice included in the costumes/accessories. For example if you are dressing up as a vampire and you want to add some coloured contact lenses to your costume, make sure that you pay careful attention to the safety information. Also, make sure that you take them out at the end of the night and don’t fall asleep wearing them. If you go to bed wearing contacts, they could fall behind your eyes which could cause serious damage to your eyesight.

However, this shouldn’t put you off from choosing a spooky Halloween costume with lots of accessories, just pay careful attention to safety information and follow all the advice provided with the product.
